Stopping
the Hermann grid illusion by sine distortion
The
usually accepted Baumgartner (or "DOG", or Mexican
Hut") model cannot explain this phenomenon
The
essence of Baumgartner's hypothesis is that a relative increase
in lateral inhibition in the receptive fields is a sufficient
condition for the perception of illusory spots; this model does
not require any further conditions.
The
stimuli to the signed receptive fields on the left and right
sides are pairwise equivalent.
So,
if Baumgartner's hypothesis were correct, illusory spots would
also appear in the sinusoidal grating - but this is not the case.
Stopping
the scintillation
Curving
the streets makes both Hermann spots and scintillation vanish.
This fact suggests a common neuronal mechanism behind the Hermann
grid illusion and the Scintillating grid illusion, whose
investigation is a task of the future.
